Nigeria’s aspiration to join the league of 20 industrial-ised nations of the world has been boosted by the Industrial Training Fund, ITF, which recently graduated 30 trainees in Abuja. The first batch was trained in electronics and computer networking, and information and communication technology (ICT) in collaboration with Singapore in order to contribute technologically to the nation’s economic drive. ITF DG, Dr Juliet Chukkas Onaeko in her address, said 97 trainees were accepted in August 2011 out of which 30 were trained at the centre, Model Skills Training Centre, MSTC, Abuja. The remaining 67 would be trained in the near future. “The ITF on its part is evolving new areas of approach to enhance the relevance and quality required of commerce and industry. New competencies are being developed in many areas including vocational and technical training, information, and communication technology (ICT) and entrepreneurship development. “ITF approached the Federal Government and got approval to collaborate with the Institute of Technical Education, Education Services, ITEES, Singapore to set up MSTC to pursue a holistic approach to technical skills development in the country”. According to the DG, “the centre is shaped with the mission to create opportunities for school leavers and adult learners to acquire employable skills, knowledge and values for life-long learning and self-help in a competitive global economy. As the economy restructures itself and moves from labour-intensive to capital-intensive and now knowledge-intensive, the Abuja MSTC is designed by the ITF to ensure that our human capital acquires the relevant skills, knowledge and values responsive to the changing needs of school leavers, industry and community for sustainability and national development. “Plans are in place to establish 38 industrial skills training centres and six centres for advanced skills training. Six mobile training workshops have also been acquired and are waiting to be commissioned. […]

Industrial Training Fund, ITF has sought the support of governments at all levels as well as the private sector to achieve its mandate of training two million Nigeria annually under the National Industrial Skills Development Programme, NISDP. Director General/ Chief Executive of ITF, Dr (Mrs) Juliet Chukkas Onaeko made the appeal yesterday at the opening ceremony of the agency’s 6th management retreat with the theme: “Mastering the art of Leading Change”, held in Asaba, Delta State. Onaeko informed that “the NISDP which is the hard skills component of the National Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) has trained over 35,000 youths nationwide in its first three phases”. This figure, she said was different from the hundreds of thousand youths that were trained through other programmes of the ITF. She, however, pointed out that “the manpower requirements of the Federal Governments transformation agenda, requires that we should do more”. “Our task will be made easier with the continuous support of governments at all levels and the goodwill of the organised private sector through patronage of our training programmes and prompt remittance of training contributions”, she said The Director General, who urged the Delta State government to impress on both the public and private sector in the state to support ITF, promised that the agency would continue to provide appropriate need based performance improvement intervention to all its clients and stakeholders. She informed that the choice of Delta for the retreat was not only due to its conducive atmosphere, but also the government’s commitment to skills acquisition as means of taking poverty, unemployment and youth restiveness in the state. Onaeko, however, told the management staff of ITF that the ability to succeed as a corporate body is dependent on their willingness to accept change, saying “as leaders in the ITF, you are expected to […]

The Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), introduced by the Federal Government to reduce the effect of the 2012 petrol price hike, have succeeded in reducing the suffering of some unemployed youths, but that is not without some costs as about 183,000 job seekers are compelled to cough a total sum of N7.3 billion as application fees. Each of the 36 states was given 5,000 job vacancy-slots to fill, while Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory was allotted 3,000 positions. West Africa BusinessNews learnt from some of the applicants, in Lagos, that the fee covers charges, including N20, 000 for uniform; N10, 000, processing fee and N700 for affidavit, Also to be paid for is “Blue Tag”, which will make it eligible for a successful applicant to collect “Yellow Tag” after being short-listed for the job, it costs N200 each. An Abuja source said those who applied earlier were told to pay N1,500 for identity card, which other states were collecting. “But our major problem is that some of us that have even paid for uniforms have not been issued any,” said the Abuja job seekers. A graduate-applicant, who said he had already submitted his form for a technical job recruitment, told our correspondent that he had to convince his parents to source the money with which to return his form, copy of which he made available to West Africa BusinessNews. “My initial worry was getting someone to sign as my guarantor, only to find out that I needed to pay the said amount, which was not receipted. All of that I have done hoping to be called for posting after all,” he stated. He said the SUREP/FERMA Federal Task Force officials would- not receive any filled form or short list an applicant for any job without the pre-payment. But when […]
